It specializes in providing education for future physical education teachers, coaches, physiotherapy specialists, and tourism and recreation specialists. The tradition of training  physical education teachers and instructors in various sports disciplines in Katowice dates back to 1952. The Academy received its current structure and name in 1979. The Academy's faculty consists of lecturers with solid research and teaching qualifications, many of whom are also active athletes or coaches. As a result, the Academy's staff provide not only theoretical knowledge but also develop the spirit of sporting artistry in students.

The issue of falls as a major geriatric problem and their prevention from the perspective of relieving the healthcare system's budget requires knowledge of the subject and dissemination of knowledge. Therefore, it is included in the education program for second-degree students in the field of Physical Education with a specialty in functional health training for middle-aged and elderly people and in the field of Physiotherapy at AWF Katowice, as well as in the lecture topics for University of the Third Age (U3A) students.

In April 2022, a group of 23 U3A students over the age of 60, who voluntarily signed up for physical activity classes using juggling preparation exercises, participated in a study. Using the Vienna test, two studies were conducted to check reaction speed. The results indicate a significant improvement in reaction speed among those who regularly performed the aforementioned exercises over three consecutive weeks. These experiences have convinced us of the need to educate seniors in fall prevention classes using juggling.
